Simple pH Science. Confident Clinical Results.

Normal vaginal pH is acidic — approximately 4.5 to 5.5. Amniotic fluid is neutral to slightly alkaline — approximately 7.0 to 7.5. When membranes rupture and amniotic fluid enters the vaginal vault, it elevates the local pH. AmnioTest™ detects this shift immediately upon withdrawal — a color change visible to the naked eye, compared against the included Color Interpretation Card.

The AmnioTest™ swab is impregnated with nitrazine yellow dye. Insert the swab and observe the color: yellow to olive-green indicates normal vaginal pH and membranes likely intact. Dark green to navy blue at pH 6.5–7.5 indicates possible ruptured membranes. Compare to the included Color Interpretation Card for a standardized, reproducible read.

colorize

Dark green to navy blue = pH 6.5–7.5 = possible ruptured membranes. Yellow to olive = pH 5.0–6.0 = likely intact.

AmniSure® cost is estimated based on market pricing — verify with your distributor. AmnioTest™ and generic nitrazine paper detect pH elevation; both may produce false positive results from blood, bacterial vaginosis, semen, or alkaline antiseptics. Clinical correlation required for all PROM test results.

The Right Tool for Every L&D Role

Bedside PROM Confidence. Act Without Waiting.

When PROM is suspected in a laboring patient, every minute matters. Chorioamnionitis, cord prolapse, and delivery timing decisions cannot wait for lab turnaround. AmnioTest™ gives you a standardized pH screen at the bedside — immediate color read, no lab equipment required.

Cut PROM Testing Cost Without Cutting Clinical Quality.

If your L&D unit runs protein immunoassay tests on every suspected PROM patient, you're paying $25–40 per test for a 5-minute result. AmnioTest™ costs ~$2.70 per test and delivers an immediate bedside color read. A tiered protocol — AmnioTest™ first, confirmatory immunoassay for equivocal cases only — can dramatically reduce cost per patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AmnioTest™ used for?expand_more

AmnioTest™ is designed to aid in the clinical detection of premature rupture of membranes (PROM) by measuring vaginal pH elevation consistent with amniotic fluid leakage. Results must be interpreted in conjunction with clinical signs, patient history, and other diagnostic testing.

How does AmnioTest™ detect amniotic fluid?expand_more

The swab is impregnated with nitrazine yellow dye. Normal vaginal pH is acidic (~4.5–5.5). Amniotic fluid is neutral (~7.0–7.5). When amniotic fluid is present, vaginal pH rises, causing the dye to shift from yellow/olive to dark green or navy blue at pH 6.5–7.5.

How long does it take to get a result?expand_more

Results are available at the bedside as an immediate color read. No lab send-out or incubation required.

Does AmnioTest™ require a speculum?expand_more

No. AmnioTest™ does not require speculum placement. This reduces patient discomfort and simplifies the procedure, especially in active labor or triage settings.

What does a positive result look like?expand_more

A dark green to navy blue color change indicates pH 6.5–7.5, which is consistent with possible amniotic fluid leakage. Compare the swab color to the included Color Interpretation Card (PL.902). A positive result indicates possible ruptured membranes — correlate with clinical presentation, pooling, ferning, or additional testing as indicated.

What does a negative result look like?expand_more

A yellow to olive-green color indicates normal vaginal pH (5.0–6.0), suggesting membranes are likely intact. All results must be correlated with clinical signs and patient history.

What is the pH detection range?expand_more

AmnioTest™ detects across the pH 5.0–7.5 range. The included color interpretation card maps the full color gradient across this range.

How long is the shelf life?expand_more

AmnioTest™ has a shelf life of up to 3 years when stored per manufacturer instructions. This is particularly valuable for L&D units and OB/GYN practices with variable test volume.

What QC verification options are available?expand_more

Six pH-calibrated buffer solutions are available (PL.910 through PL.915, covering pH 5.0 to 7.5 in 0.5-unit increments). These allow staff to verify swab reactivity at each pH level — ideal for lot acceptance testing, institutional QC protocols, and staff training. Pro-Lab also provides educational PowerPoint presentations for staff onboarding.

What is the difference between PL.901 and PL.901-20?expand_more

Both contain the same AmnioTest™ swabs. PL.901 contains 100 swabs ($269.50) — suited for active L&D units. PL.901-20 contains 20 swabs ($127.25) — suited for trial evaluation, low-volume practices, birth centers, or individual physician offices.
